The customiser is used to set elements that are site wide. For example the header, footer, typography, colours and more. Each of these can then be overridden on a page per page or block per block basis. Setting them up in the customiser first means that if you want to change for example all the colours or all fonts it can be done in a few clicks rather than having to go into page individually.

I recommend setting up the customiser settings below once you have installed the starter site. Each title (except troubleshooting 🙂) corresponds to a tab in the customiser.
